'give me your tired, your poor, your huddled t-shirts yearning to be free and perhaps in need of a stiff drink....'
from Romeo Lim's column in Malaya, March 20, 2006 --
My favorite watering hole in Malate is a place called Oarhouse. For those with naughty minds (like many of my dear friends), the name obviously reminds one of the tender trap.
Oarhouse was once owned by an American but when he decided to go back to the US with his Filipino wife, he sold it to a Filipino. The ownership changed hands several times until it was finally bought by a successful Filipino-Chinese businessman. The new owner bought the place not for profit but for the pleasure of having a place to sip a cold drink and relax after a hard day with good friends for company.
Today, he is in the company of not only good friends but also people from various, interesting walks of life. Lawyers from DOJ and NBI, reporters and correspondents from foreign wires, international and local photographers, politicians, cabinet secretaries, senators, congressmen including a few sexy stars and minor celebrities have been known to have a drink or two at the Oarhouse.
The place is often full except on its rest day on Sunday. As for me, I always look forward to kicking back and relaxing there with my ice-cold beer, pork wiener schnitzel and the company of friends from all political persuasions.
