'Notting Here' at Christmastime

It remains the dilemma of the Filipino that he does not think of country FIRST, before family and friends. And this is, unfortunately, the sticking point so denied and broken of each day of the year in our lives. Patronage and mendicancy remain our scourge and fate, as is never more seen at this time of year in the guise of religious observance and whore-filled commercialism. Black should be the color of this season most especially, and we deserve every inch and ounce of wallowing in it. Posted by Hello

Hi Ben,

I moved to Singapore right after you left, so I never got the chance to meet you. I often shutttle between Singapore and Manila, and each time I come home it feels like our country is sinking deeper and deeper.

Come to think of it - I don't even need to go to the Philippines to feel this way. All I need to do is read the editorials in our online papers.

From what I've been told, you had a good career with the Straits Times. What made you go back? Do you ever regret going back?
